A Cooperstown Victorian Christmas Experience – Gustav Mayer (1845-1918) immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1858. Mayer was trained in the confectioner’s trade and is the creator of the sugar wafer. He was also an entrepreneur and inventor. Mayer is widely known as the designer of molds from which printed biscuits or wafers were fashioned. Many of the molds are still used by larger baking and biscuit firms today. In the late 1800s Christmas ornaments became chic and entrepreneurs like Mayer began making them. Gustav opened a shop in Staten Island, New York to make “Sparkling Brilliant Ornaments” designed to hang on trees and shimmer in the candle light. Made of tin and lead, the ornaments were often painted in bright, translucent colors to make them appear to be studded with gems. Today the original Mayer tin ornaments are highly collectable. This package will provide you with the opportunity to make your own tin ornaments following the same process that Mayer did. This is a terrific way to create a new holiday tradition for your family complete with some original, keepsake ornaments for your tree. In the late 1970s Bill and Janet Rigby acquired the original, antique tin ornament making molds from the Mayer family. Bill will take you through the history of the molds and Gustav Mayer. He will then demonstrate how the molds are used in making the base ornament and will solder the hook onto the ornament. You will be able to trim the excess tin and custom decorate the ornaments as you like. During your visit to Cooperstown you will have free time to enjoy holiday festivities put on at the various museums and attractions. A list of suggested options is provided below.
