Complete your day of adventure in Cooperstown with a gorgeous sunset in the Catskills Mountains. Coupled with quiet streets and charming homes, all set amongst the beauty of Otsego County, beautiful sunsets are easy to come by. Below are our favorite picks for where to watch the sunset in Cooperstown.
Glimmerglass State Park
Nothing beats a sunset over Otsego Lake in Glimmerglass State Park. The park spans 593 acres with plenty of room to catch the colors. With tremendous views, crystal clear waters, and sandy beaches, you’ll want to stay from sunrise to sundown. Watch the sunset from the beach or in the water with your canoe or kayak. An especially good time to visit is in the fall when all the leaves display their colors of orange, red, and yellow.

Council Rock Park
Where the Susquehanna River and Otsego Lake meet, Council Rock Park offers an inspiring view and is one of our favorite places to watch the sunset in Cooperstown. You can find the rock hanging above the water surface at the bottom of a stone staircase at the corner of Lake Street and River Street. But Council Rock isn’t just about beautiful sunsets, it’s also a historic site that was a popular meeting place for Native Americans in the area.
Canoeing on the Susquehanna River
Hop in a canoe for an evening ride along the Susquehanna River and watch as the sun dips behind the trees. To find the closest access point from Cooperstown, visit the Susquehanna River Greenway’s website. Don’t have a canoe? Several outfitters in town offer daily and half-day rentals.
Gilbert Lake State Park
About half an hour outside of Cooperstown in New Lisbon, Gilbert Lake State Park is a small park that offers stunning views of the Catskill Mountains. With a sandy beach, hiking trails, and benches along the lake’s shoreline, there are plenty of opportunities to watch the sun set over the mountains.
